Thing #21 Podcasting

Prior Experience with Podcasts: My son, Brandon, had a podcast about the Cornhuskers - Midwest Coast Bias - so I was subscribed to that before he took it down at the end of the year 2007. I went to the PodcastDirectory.com to see if I could find it and I did-though the links no longer worked. I also tried to find podcasts by using the google maps. Got to Nebraska and found several in Nebraska, mostly Omaha and Lincoln, and one in Sutton. The one in Sutton had nothing. There was one in Lincoln called "The Composer's Notebook" that had interviews with various Nebraska composers, including Carol Curtwright and Jackson Berkey. But another one called "Ben's Bits" didn't have anything of use and after going there and allowing the Active X my cursor started acting goofy. The find podcasts by City was overwhelming - I was going to go to Omaha, but it involved scrolling through all the cities starting with A, B, C, etc., so I gave up. I think this finding section could be better organized. You can also find by topic so I wasn't suprised that there was pod porn available! I checked out PodCast Alley and it has similar finding features. I searched for "Omaha" and Found Otis XII and Diver Dan Doomy's shows from the 1980s and several Twilight series podcasts. I subscribed to one called "Twilight Series Theroies". I also found a "Classic Radio Theatre" that I subscribed to - I used to love listening to Mystery Theatre as a kid.

Library Applications? Just doing a "library" search I found libraries podcasting teen book reviews, poetry, historical information, the big read, book discussions. Perhaps we could podcast some of the events at the downtown Omaha Lit Fest, Poetry Bash, author talks and Opera Insights presentations. I am also working with the Douglas County Historical Society and we are conducting interviews with movers and shakers in Douglas County History - these would be prime candidates for a podcast. I am also taking part with the National Day of Listening with my mother (if we can line up a microphone in Burwell, Nebraska) for the computer, and those will be loaded on the Story Corps site. I love the idea of taking a walk or listening to something I WANT TO LISTEN TO - - this gives you a lot of control over your listening choices which is a GOOD THING! I can't wait until I have my MP3 player...

I looked at the "How to Podcast Tutorial" - loads of good information and it helped to demystify the process.
